Why Proper Chimney Maintenance is So Important

Proper chimney maintenance is vital to the efficient venting of smoke and noxious gases created when burning firewood. Smoke produced by the burning of firewood deposits creosote, an oily and flammable byproduct of smoke, on the flue walls of your chimney. Left unchecked, creosote builds up over time restricting the venting of smoke and could possibly ignite resulting in a chimney fire.

The National Fire Protection Association reports that creosote, produced by wood burned in fireplaces and stoves, accounts for the largest percentage of home heating related fires.
